Terms and conditions: Part-time (24 hours a week), 12-month fixed-term contract; News Media Guild position

Purpose of role

Guardian US is seeking a part-time editor to support its award-winning democracy and voting rights coverage. The ideal candidate has experience covering policy, elections and disenfranchised communities. Experience editing investigative or data stories - for example, based on census data and court documents - is a plus.

Key responsibilities

The editor will assign and edit freelance and staff reporters. In addition, the editor will help guide coverage and develop an understanding of voting rights issues in key states, including anti-democratic midterm candidates, voter rolls purges, the consequences of the Jan 6 insurrection, secretaries of state elections and the impact of gerrymandering. The stories we publish should be of national and international interest. With the midterms fast approaching, we're looking for a self-starter who can jump right into the mix and understands the Guardian's lens on this crucial topic.

  • Strong news judgement and high standards for fair and accurate reporting
  • Track record of collaboration
  • Knowledge of policy and electoral politics and processes
  • Daily editing experience
  • Familiarity and experience working in different story formats
