About the job

Pie's mission is to empower small businesses to thrive by making commercial insurance affordable and as easy as pie. We leverage technology to transform how small businesses buy and experience commercial insurance—starting with workers’ compensation.

Like our small business customers, we are a diverse team of builders, dreamers, and entrepreneurs who are driven by core values and operating principles that guide every decision we make.

Pie is growing rapidly, and with that growth comes an urgent need for accurate and timely financial information to support Pie’s decision-makers. We’re looking for an individual who can learn quickly, adapt quickly and take advantage of Pie’s tremendous opportunities to grow professionally.

In addition to providing hands-on operational accounting support to our Pie-oneers, vendors, partners and related parties, you will help improve existing accounting processes, develop new accounting procedures, support new financial system implementations, and take ownership of the company’s financial statements.

In this role, you will report to the Manager, Accounting within our Finance and Accounting team.

How You’ll Do It

  • Prepare journal entries, reconciliations, and variance analyses in accordance with U.S. GAAP and internal company policies. Consistently meet month-end close deadlines for assigned tasks.
  • Own key accounts payable activities, including invoice processing, vendor maintenance and driving timely and accurate vendor payments.
  • Perform other operational accounting tasks to support Pie’s overall business, including reconciling bank accounts, monitoring corporate credit card transactions and reviewing employees’ expense reports .
  • Develop and maintain documentation of current accounting policies and procedures. Identify areas for operational improvement, provide recommendations and assist with implementing the changes.
  • Support year-end financial statement audit by preparing workpapers and working directly with external auditors.
  • Partner with the Finance team to analyze historical results and improve information quality.
  • Assist with ad hoc projects and requests as needed. Adapt to new tasks and responsibilities as the business grows and changes.

The Right Stuff

  • At least 2 years of relevant public accounting or industry experience required; prior experience in both strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • Solid understanding of U.S. GAAP and accounting operations
  • Self-starter and self-motivated to work independently and adapt within a fast-paced environment
  • Organized, detail-oriented and deadline-driven
  • Strong communication skills of all types
  • Strong Excel skills and ability to work with large data sets
  • Active CPA or currently pursuing certification a plus

Compensation Range for position: $60,000 - $95,000

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive cash compensation
  • A piece of the pie (in the form of equity)
  • Comprehensive health plans
  • Generous PTO, including paid sick leave
  • Future focused 401k match
  • Generous parental and caregiver leave
  • Our core values are more than just a poster on the wall; they’re tangibly reflected in our work

Our goal is to make all aspects of working with us as easy as pie. That includes our offer process. When we’ve identified a talented individual who we’d like to be a Pie-oneer , we work hard to present an equitable and fair offer. We look at the candidate’s knowledge, skills, and experience, along with their compensation expectations and align that with our company equity processes to determine our offer ranges.

Each year Pie reviews company performance and may grant discretionary bonuses to eligible team members.
